What happens to your body in three minutes at -110°C

Skin cools fast, vessels narrow, noradrenaline rises, then a deep calm. A plain-language walk through a cryotherapy session, minute by minute.

In three minutes at -110°C, your skin cools by roughly 12 to 14 degrees, the blood vessels in your skin narrow, your heart rate shifts and the noradrenaline in your blood rises sharply. Your core barely moves. That is what has been measured. What people report is a rush of alertness during the session and a deep calm afterwards. Here is the walk-through, minute by minute, with a clear line between what is measured and what is felt.

Before you step in

You arrive dry. That matters more than it sounds. Reception gives you gloves, socks and a headband, and you go in wearing underwear or shorts. Any moisture on the skin would freeze, so you dry off fully and remove jewellery. The chamber at Freezlab is electric. It cools dry air, with no nitrogen contact, so you breathe normally the whole time. A host is with you throughout.

Minute by minute

Minute one: the skin reacts

The first thing you notice is the air. It is cold but strangely thin, and there is no wind. Your skin temperature begins to drop within seconds. In a 2013 study in PLOS ONE, three minutes in a -110°C chamber lowered skin temperature by almost 14 degrees on average. That drop is the trigger for everything else.

The blood vessels in your skin narrow. This is vasoconstriction, and it is the body's well established first response to cold: pull warm blood inwards and protect the core. Your breathing tends to get shorter and faster for a moment. Most people describe the first thirty seconds as the toughest, not because of pain, but because the sensation is new.

Minute two: the nervous system wakes up

Around the one-minute mark, the cold stops feeling like a shock and starts feeling like a state. The sympathetic nervous system is now fully engaged. That same 2013 study measured a 76 percent rise in plasma noradrenaline after whole body exposure. Adrenaline, interestingly, did not change significantly. So when people say they feel an adrenaline rush, what has actually been measured is noradrenaline. The feeling is similar: sharp focus, wide awake, a slight buzz.

What about endorphins? People describe a lift in mood that lasts for hours, and it is a consistent report. But direct measurement of endorphins after whole body cryotherapy is thin, and most of what is written about it comes from cold water research or from theory. We would rather tell you that than pretend.

Minute three: steady, and then done

By the third minute, most people settle. You are moving gently, talking to the host, sometimes laughing. Your skin is at its coldest. Your core temperature has moved by about a third of a degree at most. The door opens, and the room air feels almost warm.

Why it feels different from cold water

Water conducts heat far better than air. So on paper, an ice bath should cool you more. In practice, cold air at -110°C cooled the skin surface faster than 8°C water in a 2012 comparison in PLOS ONE, while muscle temperature dropped by a similar amount in both. The difference is in the experience. Dry air does not pull heat out of you in the relentless way water does. There is no wind chill inside the chamber, so the cold sits on your skin rather than cutting through it. That is why three minutes at -110°C is easier to tolerate than three minutes in a bath at 8°C, even though the number sounds far more extreme.

The twenty minutes after

This is the part people come back for. As you step out, the vessels in your skin open again and warm blood returns. Your skin flushes pink. The 2013 study tracked heart rate variability for twenty minutes after exposure and found a large rise in parasympathetic activity. In plain language: the alert phase fades into a calm one. Heart rate goes down. Many members describe this window as the best part of their day.

Skin temperature stays lowered for at least twenty minutes, so you may feel pleasantly cool for a while. Some people shiver lightly. A short walk or ten minutes under red light helps. What has not been shown is any lasting physiological change after one session. The 2014 review in the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine is clear that the longer term claims rest on small studies. The calm and the clarity are real, though, and they are yours for the afternoon.
